Progressive Development of a New Tool for Rapid Thematic Analysis of Community Perceptions and Concerns During Health Emergencies.

Global health, science and practice2025 Dec 31

Rapid analysis of community needs, perspectives, and concerns during global health emergencies is essential but technically challenging. In the past, emergency responders have struggled to listen to and engage affected communities because of perceptions about anticipated costs and time delays in receiving actionable results. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Excel Tool for Thematic Analysis was developed over 5 years of assisting with emergency responses for Ebola, COVID-19, Sudan Ebolavirus, mpox, and the Ukraine crisis. Beginning with a simple Excel spreadsheet for coding Ebola-related community feedback, we continued to add new features as needs arose, such as preloaded epidemic and health emergency coding schemes, preprogrammed results tables, step-by-step thematic analysis instruction, YouTube training videos, and planning and communication tools for effective use of the results. The tool is a customized Excel workbook for qualitative text coding and thematic analysis that enables the user to code and derive key themes from texts, such as interview and focus group transcripts, notes, surveys with open-ended questions, and social media comments. We review the 10 programmed worksheets for planning, cataloguing, coding, and thematically analyzing any kind of text data. The strategies for rapid community feedback analysis during health emergencies are a special application of qualitative analysis methodology to the health emergency setting, enabling a deep reading and transparent and defensible interpretation of the text. Skills learned while using the tool are easily transferable to analyses using licensed software or fully manual methods. The tool offers a step-by-step guide for anyone to analyze text data to answer a relevant question in or outside the context of emergencies.

Introducing a hybrid intrusion detection method for IoT-cloud environments based on ResNeXt and improved Ebola optimization search algorithm.

Scientific reports2025 Oct 28

With the advent of IoT and its immense possibilities through cloud randomization, connectivity has matured almost out of proportion; yet this factor has equally opened various attack surfaces thereby rendering IoT-cloud environments vulnerable to multiple attacks. To address the issue, we introduce a versatile approach for hybrid intrusion diagnosis made possible through ResNeXt, a DCNN architecture noted for high efficiency and scalability in extracting features, and the Improved Ebola Optimization Search Algorithm (IEOSA), a novel metaheuristic optimizer fashioned after the spread dynamics of the Ebola virus, yet enhanced to offer speed and reliability in search performance. The proposed approach uses the comprehensive feature extraction ability of ResNeXt combined with the improved searching efficiency of the IEOSA to provide a superior method for the detection of anomalies and intrusions in an IoT-cloud environment. The network attained a detection accuracy of 98.3% and above 97% for recall, F1 score, and precision on standard datasets, including CICIDS 2017 and NSL-KDD. The hybrid framework enhances the performance of traditional and even a few deep-learning techniques, to provide a more secure IoT-cloud ecosystem. The results highlight the opportunity for integrating deep learning with a robust metaheuristic optimization approach for better efficiency and effectiveness in intrusion detection within digital infrastructures.

Enhancing cyberthreat defense mechanisms using ensemble of representation learning with binary Ebola optimization search in internet of things environment.

Scientific reports2025 Sep 26

In the present digital era, malware defences and attacks are becoming more difficult, creating a progressing cyberthreat landscape. With the fast development in technology, cyberthreats have shown improved intricacy and potency that frequently exceed the abilities of conventional defence systems. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technical development that allows machine-to-machine and human-to-human interaction for essential data exchange. The IoT provides numerous advantages but also builds several problems. Exposures in IoT methods are problematic and main to devices enduring various threats, with the danger of denial of service (DoS) and security challenges like privacy, confidentiality, and obtainability to assault. This manuscript proposes a cyberthreat defence mechanism using a Binary Ebola Optimization Search Algorithm and Ensemble Models (CDM-BEOSAEM) method. The main intention of the CDM-BEOSAEM method is to enhance the cyberattack detection method in an IoT environment. Initially, the min-max normalization is applied in the data normalization stage to convert input data into a beneficial format. Furthermore, the binary ebola optimization search algorithm (BEOSA) model recognizes the most appropriate features in the feature selection (FS) process. For the classification of cyberthreat defence, the proposed CDM-BEOSAEM model utilizes an ensemble of bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU), auto-encoders (AE), and graph convolutional network (GCN) techniques. Finally, the hyperparameter selection of ensemble models is performed by implementing the escape Coati Optimization Algorithm (eCOA) technique. The simulation of the CDM-BEOSAEM approach is accomplished under the ToN-IoT dataset, and the results are measured using various measures. The performance validation of the CDM-BEOSAEM approach portrayed a superior accuracy value of 99.29% over existing models.

Ebola virus disease sequelae and viral persistence in animal models: Implications for the future.

PLoS pathogens2024 Mar

Ebola virus disease (EVD), caused by infection with Ebola virus, results in severe, acute illness with a high mortality rate. As the incidence of outbreaks of EVD increases and with the development and approval of medical countermeasures (MCMs) against the acute disease, late phases of EVD, including sequelae, recrudescence, and viral persistence, are occuring more frequently and are now a focus of ongoing research. Existing animal disease models recapitulate acute EVD but are not suitable to investigate the mechanisms of these late disease phenomena. Although there are challenges in establishing such a late disease model, the filovirus research community has begun to call for the development of an EBOV persistence model to address late disease concerns. Ultimately, this will aid the development of MCMs against late disease and benefit survivors of future EVD and filovirus outbreaks.

Exploring equity in global health collaborations: a qualitative study of donor and recipient power dynamics in Liberia.

BMJ global health2024 Mar 13

IntroductionGlobal health collaborations between individuals from high-resource and low-resource settings are complex and often built on hierarchical structures and power differentials that are difficult to change. There have been many calls and frameworks developed to facilitate more equity within these collaborations, yet little is known about the lived experiences of global health donors and recipients working within such collaborations and how those experiences can facilitate more equitable collaboration. Liberia, a postconflict, post-Ebola country, provides an ideal setting to study lived experiences of global health collaborations.MethodsOur qualitative analysis used key informant interviews representing the perspectives of those working on behalf of the Liberian government, Liberian academics, foreign donors and non-governmental organisations and implementing partners. Thematic analysis guided this analysis to explore topics such as financial control, accountability and decision making.ResultsThe first phase of the analysis mapped the existing patterns of priority setting. Priority-setting power was most strongly held by those with financial control (donors), and implementation plans tended to be built on metrics that aim to meet donor expectations. The second phase of the analysis explored the interplay between underlying factors that we identified in our data associated with driving collaborative inequity: history of prior of engagement, level of transparency and patterns of accountability.ConclusionsOur findings highlight that global health collaborations in Liberia are structured to hinder equitable partnerships. The power structure tied to financial ownership offers little space for recipients to have an equitable role in collaborations, which maintains dependence on external aid and ensures that weak systems remain weak. While our study is limited to Liberia, we anticipate that these dynamics are common elsewhere and reinforce the importance of intentional efforts to ensure equitable decision making and power structures in similar settings worldwide.
