Behavioral shifts mask the success of legislation and outreach for endangered species recovery.
A fundamental challenge in conservation is assessing the efficacy of recovery actions to optimize endangered species management. Considerable recent attention has focused on effective measures to counter the endangerment of avian scavengers, which have declined worldwide, primarily due to poisoning. One iconic example is efforts to recover the critically endangered California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), whose leading cause of death is poisoning from ingesting lead-based ammunition in carcasses. Despite enormous resources expended in California, USA, including implementation of public outreach campaigns and two legislative bans on lead ammunition, lead-related mortality of condors has increased. Here we show that two types of behavioral shifts explain the observed increases in condor lead exposure: wilder foraging and ranging by condors and increased shooting of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) by humans. After accounting for these trends, we show that both lead ammunition bans and public outreach efforts have significantly reduced condor blood lead levels in California, lowering mortality. Our analyses uncover a dynamic in which changing ecological conditions mask the true efficacy of legislation and outreach. Given rapid global change, such dynamics are likely operating in many settings, underscoring the importance of comprehensive evaluations of recovery actions, which can be obscured by shifting behaviors and threats.
A standardized osteometric method for identifying Iberian raptors from skeletal remains.
Raptors suffer high mortality rates due to anthropogenic threats, such as electrocution from power lines or lead poisoning, so the specific identification of skeletal remains is essential for establishing monitoring and protection programmes. This study developed and validated a standardized osteometric method for measuring long bones and craniopelvic bones from skeletal remains to identify raptor species. A database of 26 species of Iberian raptors (n = 853) was developed based on 11 measurements of 9 bones, including the ulna, sternum, femur, humerus, tarsometatarsus, tibiotarsus, and radius, as well as the synsacrum length and postacetabular ilium width and length and width of the skull. Missing values were estimated using multiple linear regression, and canonical discriminant analysis was applied to correct and modify the databases. Cross-validation was added to this analysis. Additionally, the obtained model was verified using external radiographs. The highest percentage of success was obtained with the tarsometatarsus-ulna combination (94.53%), followed by tarsometatarsus-radius (94.05%) and tarsometatarsus-humerus (93.02%), when two bone lengths were combined. When a third measurement was incorporated, the tarsometatarsus-ulna-femur combination achieved a 99.45% correct classification rate. In blind verification testing, the radiographs of 15 individuals, the tarsometatarsus-ulna model correctly classified all samples, achieving a 100% success rate. These results show that the study method provides a simple and replicable protocol for identifying raptor species from incomplete skeletal remains. This optimizes the monitoring of mortality and supporting conservation measures.
Epidemiologic Trends in Pediatric Lead Poisoning at Freestanding Children's Hospitals, 2016-2023.
Elevated blood lead levels are still prevalent among children in the United States, and there continue to be published reports of severe childhood lead poisoning across the United States. However, the epidemiology of hospital encounters for severe lead poisoning is still unknown. We included encounters for children with a primary diagnosis of lead poisoning using Pediatric Hospital Information System data from 2016 to 2023. We used descriptive statistics to characterize patient sociodemographic factors, clinical characteristics, and hospital utilization, as well as Poisson regression accounting for hospital state-level variation, to estimate lead poisoning rates by patient race and ethnicity, insurance payor, urbanicity, and Childhood Opportunity Index (COI) level. There were 845 inpatient hospitalizations and 1137 emergency department visits for lead poisoning across 47 hospitals, resulting in over $4.5 million mean cumulative annual billed charges. Compared with patients who identified as white, non-Hispanic, patients who identified as Asian, non-Hispanic (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.75); Black, non-Hispanic (IRR, 1.44); and multiracial, non-Hispanic (IRR, 2.26) had significantly higher rates of lead poisoning encounters. Those with public insurance had higher rates of encounters compared with those with commercial insurance (IRR, 2.14). Patients in rural zip codes had significantly higher rates of encounters than patients in urban zip codes (IRR, 1.51). Patients in low- (IRR, 1.79) and very low-COI (IRR, 3.22) zip codes had significantly higher rates of encounters compared with those in very high-COI zip codes. This study finds that severe lead poisoning remains a substantial health concern. We found significant disparities in the rate of encounters by sociodemographic factors that warrant further action.
